How to Make Rainbow Jello

How to Make Rainbow Jello

Amy: Hi, I'm Amy. This is House of Nash Eats,  ,and today we are making rainbow Jell-O. Amy:  ,Okay, so when we're doing rainbow Jell-O, we're  going to start with the bottom layer, which is  ,the purple or the grape layer. We're going to try  to follow the colors of the rainbow, which is Roy  ,G. Biv. Did you learn that? Red, orange, yellow,  green, blue, violet ... and then purple? Purple  ,violet? I don't know. Anyway, we're not doing  all the layers. We're just doing one purple  ,and we're using our grape Jell-O. Amy:  ,These ones, I sometimes have a hard time finding  in the smaller size packets. I like to get the  ,small boxes when they're available. If not,  I just buy the big box and use half of it.  ,Amy: We're going to dissolve  ,our grape Jell-O, or gelatin, powdered gelatin,  in one cup of boiling water. You can do this on  ,the stove, or I just pop it in the microwave  for four to five minutes until it's boiling.  ,Then you just stir until it's dissolved. Then  add one teaspoon of unflavored gelatin powder,  ,half of the package, half of the little envelope  of gelatin powder. These are going to set up more  ,like Jell-O Jigglers. If you grew up in the '80s  and '90s and love Jell-O Jigglers, like I do,  ,you know that they're finger Jell-O. They're  easy to eat with your hands. They set up a little  ,firmer than most gelatin, and that little bit of  extra unflavored gelatin powder is going to help  ,it to set all the way. Amy:  ,Just stir until that is dissolved, and then  we're going to pour it into our nine by 13 pan.  ,Now I've got that all dissolved, and I'm just  going to pour it into my nine by 13 inch pan.  ,This Jell-O takes a little while to make.  It's a little bit labor intensive. I mean,  ,you have to stir and that's it; but  you have to set it between each layer,  ,which is going to take 20 to 30 minutes. So  it takes about four hours to really do this  ,Jell-O from start to finish. I usually  do it at night once the kids are in bed,  ,or I'll put on a movie and just do it in between  there. I'm going to go pop this in the fridge.  ,Amy: Okay, so I just put my grape Jell-O  ,in the fridge to set. While that's setting, I'm  going to work on the white layer for the Jell-O.  ,You can go ahead and make each layer when you  put the other one in the fridge because it gives  ,it some time to cool down a little bit. If you're  pouring hot Jell-O on top of your just set Jell-O,  ,you run the risk of the different layers melting  together. Give it some time to cool down a little  ,bit before you add the next layer. Amy:  ,We have one cup of boiling water, and we're  going to do a full packet or, yeah, a full  ,little envelope of powdered gelatin and stir this  in to dissolve. It just takes a minute for it to  ,dissolve in while you stir it. Amy:  ,This wouldn't taste like anything. It wouldn't  taste very good if you just set the gelatin like  ,this, because it's not sweet. There's nothing in  it to flavor the unflavored gelatin. So to flavor  ,the white layer, we are going to use sweetened  condensed milk just to give it a nice creamy,  ,sweet flavor. Really, you're going to  taste the flavors of the other Jell-Os  ,in this rainbow Jell-O, but the sweetened  condensed milk gives you a nice creamy flavor  ,in between that balances better. Plus, it gives  the nice white color. This doesn't have a white  ,color to it just yet. Amy:  ,Now that I've got the gelatin dissolved, I'm  going to open my sweetened condensed milk.  ,I'm going to pour half of the can in. You can  see already that this is turning nice and white,  ,and it will give a nice solid white layer to break  up the different colors of the other Jell-Os.  ,This is actually enough for two layers of white.  So I make two layers at a time. The reason you  ,don't want to make all of the white layers at the  same time is this will eventually set up because  ,there's plenty of gelatin in it. So I do two  layers at a time, and then you have to remake it a  ,couple of times along the way. Once my grape layer  is set and this is cooled a little bit, we'll pour  ,this over the top of the grape layer. Amy:  ,Okay, so I've got our grape, our  purple layer, out of the fridge,  ,and now my white layer has cooled so it's  not really that hot. Now what you want to do  ,is you want to use three-fourths of a cup of this  white Jell-O. We're going to pour it right over  ,the grape layer. I find that it works best to  pour it over the back of a spoon or a spatula  ,just to spread it out so that it doesn't  drill a hole into the layer underneath.  ,Be sure when you're putting this in the  fridge that you've cleared enough space  ,to have a nice flat area for your Jell-O so  that you don't end up with crooked layers.  ,Amy: Okay, and there's exactly three-fourths  ,of a cup left for the next layer of white. But at  this point, we're going to just tilt it around a  ,little bit so that the white completely covers.  We're going to put this in the fridge an

How to Make Ree’s Layered Salad | The Pioneer Woman | Food Network

How to Make Ree’s Layered Salad | The Pioneer Woman | Food Network

since this is a salad i'm starting out,by chopping up some lettuce i'm starting, with iceberg lettuce partly because it's,really really sturdy and it makes a good, foundation for the rest of the, ingredients, now i'll just make a big layer in the, bottom of a bowl, okay now i'll do a layer of tomatoes,i'll just cut off the top,and then i'll cut it into six pieces and, they'll just be big chunks of tomatoes,i love to pick ingredients with all, different colors for this salad makes it,look really pretty, okay now i'll start arranging the, tomatoes,i concentrate on the outside of the bowl, because i want to make sure to get all, that beautiful color alrighty i think, that ought to be enough now for the next, lettuce i have some baby spinach, and i'll just pile that on top of the, tomatoes i like to do a mix of spinach, and iceberg the iceberg is nice and, crunchy but the spinach has that, gorgeous dark green color so it just, helps the prettiness of the salad, okay now on top of the spinach i'm going,to put some chopped hard boiled eggs the, eggs are all chopped up,so i'll just pile those in,concentrate around the perimeter, make sure you can see them on the side,oh my goodness, beautiful, now i'm gonna sprinkle the eggs with, just a little salt and pepper, get some seasoning in there in the, middle of the salad okay now on top of,the hard-boiled eggs i'm gonna put a,whole bunch of chopped bacon leave it to,me to put bacon in my nice healthy salad, okay,i'll just sprinkle the bacon all over, the eggs,oh boy i love hard-boiled eggs and bacon,i just love that combo, perfect now i'll sprinkle in some sliced, green onion i did the light green and a,little bit of dark green parts, big big flavor with these, now on top of the green onions i'll put,a bunch of grated sharp cheddar cheese, and you can get creative with this layer, you can do pepper jack if you want it to,have a little bit of a spice, any kind of cheese you want you can even,do a mix, just even out the surface, this is getting more and more full, now i have some frozen green peas i just, rinsed them under cool water and let, them thaw just a bit,and i'm going to pour those over, this will be the very top layer before i,put on the dressing,it's just mayo, and sour cream with a little bit of,sugar, mixed until smooth, okay now the dressing just gets poured, right over the top,the great thing about this salad is the, dressing pretty much seals everything in,the bowl you'll see some of the peas, poking through the dressing now to give,it just a little bit of extra flavor i'm,going to chop up some herbs and sprinkle, those over the top they'll just make it,taste even fresher i've got some fresh, parsley and fresh dill i thought that, would be a really yummy combination and,i'll just mince them up really finely, okay the herbs are really really fine so,i'll just sprinkle them pretty lightly, over the top okay the salad's done

Make Ahead Layered Salad ~ Perfect for Parties & Potlucks!

Make Ahead Layered Salad ~ Perfect for Parties & Potlucks!

this isn't just any ordinary salad this, salad is one that memories are built on,and i kid you not it's my favorite, layered salad that my mom used to make, all throughout my childhood for special, occasions the best news is you make it,ahead of time welcome to the salted, pepper where we cook for real life using, real food and we keep it real simple, today we're going to make a simple salad, with very basic ingredients and in fact, you can change up any of the ingredients,to use what you like but the great thing, about this salad is you can make it up,about two days in advance so it is,perfect for a potluck party for any type,of entertaining even a dinner where you, want to have a portion of it done ahead,of time, this is your go-to salad and it is,amazing so first let's get the dressing, mixed up this is a dressing that my mom, used to make all the time it's very very, simple and it does use a packet of ranch, seasoning so if you don't want to use,the packet of ranch you can make up your, own ranch seasoning okay just look up a,recipe online and mix up some different, spices and you can get your own blend, but because i'm kind of paying tribute,to my mom here today i'm gonna stick, with her method which is using the, package of hidden valley ranch dressing, all right so what i have in this bowl, right now is one and a half cups of mayo,i'm using helmets you can use any good, quality mayo i don't recommend using, miracle whip for this it just will throw, the flavor off,and then i have three quarters of a cup,of sour cream so i'm gonna put that in,here right now,we're gonna, throw in the packet of ranch which you, know if guys if you follow me a lot you, know i don't use a lot of packets but, when i'm making my mom's recipes i like,to stay, very true to how she does it and that's,what she uses, and one and a half tablespoons of sugar, now this is optional you could leave it,out you could also use swerve or sugar, substitute if you wanted but again this,is mom's recipe one and a half, tablespoons going in,and then i like to add a little extra, dill and i think mom always did too so,you can use between a half of a teaspoon, and a whole teaspoon or if you're not a,big fan of dill skip it it'll be fine, but i happen to like dill especially in,this recipe so i'm going to use a full, teaspoon in my dressing, and then we whisk it up,this also makes a great dip for veggies,so if you wanted to skip the layered, salad but have a vegetable tray whip, this dressing up oh my gosh it's so,amazing, all right that looks good, now i will set this to the side and, let's get to layering our salad, now like i said before you can use any, type of ingredients that you want but,you want to keep them on the dryer side, you don't want to really a lot of wet, ingredients like you don't want to put, pickles in with pickle juice and things, like that but i'll go over a couple of,variations that i've put in my salad and, have worked perfectly fine, now the bowl i'm using to layer my salad,in is a straight sided three quart bowl, that i bought off of amazon, however you can use any mixing bowl it,doesn't have to be straight sided so you,can use any type of mixing bowl just, remember when you do that your layers, aren't going to be completely even and, that's fine mine aren't even going to be,even when i do it in this bowl but it,will be perfectly fine i've made it that, way many times and it's absolutely, beautiful and delicious all right so the, first thing that i'm gonna put in is my,lettuce now i've done this several, different ways you do want your lettuce, whatever kind you use to be,finely chopped so think of this as like,a chopped salad if you've ever had that, ordered at a restaurant you know all the, ingredients are chopped up that is how,you want to do prep everything that you,put in it okay so it's going to be,finely chopped i've used a combination,of romaine and iceberg i've used, some iceberg and some other salad mixes, like butter lettuce and things like that,it's perfectly fine but you do want to,have some of the iceberg or some of the, romaine with whatever other kinds of,lettuce that you use because you want, this to be really crispy okay and so i,think iceberg is the best choice and, that's what i have here today i didn't,even mix it with romaine so i have one, small head which is about i would say, four to five cups the measurements, depend on the size of your bowl okay,so if you have a much smaller bowl, you're going to use half of a head okay, because you want to make sure you fit it,all in the bowl and i'm going to go,ahead and start layering this in,so put a layer of your lettuce on the, bottom and it is important that you, layer in order of the lettuce being on,the bottom the dressing being on the, very top,but other than that you can really play, around with it and layer it however you, want,so i may not use all of this lettuce i'm,looking here now where it's coming up,about, about an inch and a half and that's,about all i want really,so i used about three quarters of the, head of lettuce, and

Old Time Jello Salad Recipe
