1971 RECIPE! Chewy Coconut Bars from Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library

1971 RECIPE! Chewy Coconut Bars from Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library

hey everyone last summer i collaborated, with several other amazing youtube food, creators, around this box this is the 1971 betty, crocker recipe card library to,commemorate the one year anniversary of,our collaboration all of us decided to,get together and do it again happy, beniversary everyone, happy beniversary, happy betty bursary, happy birthday happy birthday,oh my nose today i'm going to be,preparing, coconut shoes, what's everybody else making i'm making, pizza with a hamburger crust,i'm making raspberry ring with creamy, fruit,i'm making oven porcupines we're making, oatmeal squares,be right back last year i made a,chocolate butter mellow cake and it was, stressful,i was still very new to making videos, but that cake was absolutely delicious, and i can only hope that these coconut, chews turn out just as yummy betty, describes these cookies as chewy and, rich with a brown buttery crust good, keepers too i'm glad they're good, keepers because this makes 32 bars, heat oven to 350 which i have done cream, shortening and confectioners sugar so,this recipe calls for shortening and it,says to use butter for part of it as,well so i have some shortening here it,is kind of a hot day today not ideal for, baking but ideal for measuring, shortening because it is very soft and i,have some butter then my confectioners, sugar, set that off to assume,oh my butter's not soft enough, this can't be going wrong already i just, started blend in one and a half cups of,flour, powdered sugar everywhere it's very, crumbly i'm hoping that's what it's,supposed to be betty doesn't say she, doesn't often give the most detailed, instructions on these recipe cards, pretty sandy, press mixture in bottom of ungreased,9x13 baking pan it says ungreased i'm,really hoping these will come out very, easily, there we have it so now i have to make, this for 12 to 15 minutes, speaking of not very detailed, instructions the rest of this recipe is,mostly mixed remaining ingredients, brown sugar, eggs, that i will not be cracking on my pyrex,we've got our two tablespoons of flour, baking soda and salt, half a teaspoon of vanilla there we are,we've got chopped walnuts, flaked coconut the star of the show, coconut, appears in the name so i'm gonna say, coconut is the star, here we go,here's what the crust looks like just, out of the oven it definitely reminds me,of like a pie crust actually it looks a,lot like the pie crust mix that i used,to make the peach double deckers it said, that you're supposed to pour this on,while the crust is still hot so let's go,ahead and do,that, yes i think this is going to be,delicious it smells so good i'm ready to,try these i mean i have a while yet so,now that we've put our brown sugar, mixture on top of the crust it goes back,in the oven for about 20 minutes i have,a few minutes left for the big time on,this layer so i thought why not make the, icing supposed to combine confectioner's,sugar which i got all over the place, while i was measuring it as usual two, tablespoons of melted butter, three tablespoons of orange juice,a teaspoon of lemon juice i'm just gonna, squeeze a little from here oh,no and mix that together,i think that looks nice and smooth, kind of say i'm very curious about this, combination of like orange and lemon, with this brown sugar coconut could be,really good i don't know though just it,just sounds like an unusual mix of,flavors, you take a look at that, these have been cooling for a few, minutes you know they're not ready to,eat yet but i think it's safe to top, them with the icing lovely citrusy icing, that i made, and it's just gonna melt isn't it it's,just gonna melt this isn't like a,buttercream frosting anyway it's kind of,almost more like a glaze what does it,look like on here it's like a pretty, thin layer, looking good however they are still, pretty hot so they're really not ready,to cut i'll pick this up for a taste, test a little bit later how did i do,can you see that,a couple of notes yes i do have notes, for betty crocker these definitely cut a,little bit more easily after some fridge, time i tried to cut them yesterday after, they cooled down from the oven and they, were just a crumbly mess fridge time, really really helped i made them about, two inches by three inches after, rereading the recipe card betty says, you're supposed to cut these three, inches by one inch i just don't think, they have the structural integrity to,withstand that i think they would be too, skinny and they just fall right apart, this seems like a better size anyway,it's a little bit more of a bar cookie, size than i'm used to you know maybe it,would be more elegant,to cut them in smaller pieces but people, are probably going to eat more than one, anyway why not make them this size they, smelled wonderful while they were baking, caramelly brown sugar just really really, great so i think that bodes well for the, taste at least i hope so moment of truth, those are very good they're very sweet, maybe betty was right about cutting them,a little bit smaller they have a bit of,a fall flavor to

Chocolate Oatmeal Squares | 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library

my name is stephanie and this is,gingersnap kitchen, last year a few youtube friends and i,all got together and we each cooked up,something from the 1971 betty crocker, recipe card library, and now we're back to do it again for,our one year betty bursary, happy betty bursary, happy birtversary, happy betty bursary, happy beniversary, happy birthday,oh my nose we're making oatmeal squares,be right back, after spraying and lining an eight by,eight inch pan with parchment paper i,added two cups of old-fashioned oats to,my mixing bowl, then i added half a cup of brown sugar, and i stirred it all up to combine them, next i combine half a cup of melted, butter with a quarter cup of dark corn, syrup,a quarter teaspoon of salt, and one teaspoon of vanilla,i stir them together then i added them,to the oats and brown sugar, once everything was well mixed and the, oats were fully coated in the butter, mixture,i transferred it to my greased pan,and pressed it evenly in the bottom of,the pan, then i placed the pan in my preheated,400 degree oven and baked it for about,15 minutes once it's baked it should be,golden brown and bubbly,i removed it from the oven and allowed,it to cool to room temperature, then i melted six ounces of semi-sweet,chocolate in the microwave,i removed it from the pan using the, parchment paper to lift it out,i spread the melted chocolate evenly, over the top surface of the cookie layer, then i top the melted chocolate with one, third of a cup of chopped pecans,i placed it in the refrigerator for 10,minutes to allow the chocolate to harden, slightly which prevents the chocolate, from cracking when you cut it into, squares, then i cut it in squares returned it to,the fridge until the chocolate was, completely firm,i really enjoyed these,it's a nice old-fashioned recipe that's,got just a handful of simple ingredients, and it's quick and easy to put together, they're buttery and nutty and delicious,i'm glad i chose this one i hope you'll,try these sometime and i hope you'll,come back again soon to see the next, recipe i decide to try, most of what you'll see here is me,trying recipes for the very first time, and since i'm not a professional if i,can make it so can you please take a,look at the other recipes in this, collaboration they're a nice bunch of,people and i'm positive they've got a,lot more for you to love take a look i'm,making raspberry ring with creamy fruit,i'm making oven porcupines i'm making, coconut chews,i'm making pizza with a hamburger crust,i've linked their channels in the, description box below thanks so much for, watching till the end and i'll see you,in the next one don't forget to,subscribe

🍖 Pot Roast with Sour Cream Gravy 🍖 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library | Vintage Recipe |

🍖 Pot Roast with Sour Cream Gravy 🍖 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library | Vintage Recipe |

Today’s video is all about this 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library.,This is part of a collaboration consisting of Anna from Cooking the Books, Jim from Jim’s,Kitsch Kitchen, Melinda from Unboxing Betty, Stephanie from Ginger Snap Kitchen, and me,,Maikoh.,We’re each picking a recipe from this box to see how they hold up 50 years later.,Maikoh: I’ve got my box, how about you?,Stephanie: I've got my box!,Melinda: I've got my box!,Jim: I've got my box!,Anna: I've got my box!,Great! Let’s get started!,Today I’m making Pot-Roast with Sour Cream Gravy.,You can press the ‘cc’ button to turn on subtitles or check out the full list of,ingredients in the video description.,As I mentioned before, this recipe comes from the 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library.,It was passed down to my mother-in-law, who then passed it down to us a few years ago.,I had completely forgotten about it until I found Melinda’s channel, Unboxing Betty,,where she’s cooking every recipe from this box.,This recipe library was originally mail ordered as a monthly subscription, with each section, coming in the mail, each month until the box was full.,This Pot-Roast recipe really stands out to me as a classic that’ll taste fantastic,,combined with a Sour Cream Gravy that I’m not so sure about!,For the Pot-Roast, you’re going to need:,2 tbsp flour, 2 tsp salt, ¼ tsp black pepper, 2 ½ lb beef chuck pot-roast, 1 tbsp shortening,,¼ cup water, 1 tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp fresh dill or ¼ tsp dried dill, 5 small potatoes,,peeled and chopped, 5 carrots, peeled and quartered, and 1 lb zucchini, quartered.,We’re starting off by combining the flour, 1 tsp of salt, and pepper in a bowl, and whisking,to distribute evenly.,Now we’re gonna evenly coat the meat with this flour mixture, making sure that the top,,bottom, and sides are all fully covered.,Next, add your shortening to a large skillet or Dutch oven and melt over medium-high heat.,Now add in your meat, and let it fry in the shortening until nicely browned, about 5 minutes,,before flipping...,(check out that awesome crust!),...and browning the other side for another 5 minutes.,At this point, the meat’s gonna look and smell amazing,,but you’ll just have to refrain from digging in, as it’ll still be really tough.,So now that everything is evenly browned on both sides, let’s go ahead and add in our, water and vinegar.,Sprinkle the dill over the meat and cover.,I’m using dried dill and like with my crab cakes, I again underestimated its strength.,1 tsp was a bit overpowering, so just use ¼ if you’re using dried.,Turn the heat down and simmer about 3 hours or until the meat is tender.,The recipe goes on to tell you to add in veggies an hour before the end of the cooking time,,so I started adding them in at 2 hours and ended up needing extra cooking time, so I,suggest simmering the meat for the 3 hours before moving on.,Now we’re gonna add in our potatoes, and carrots, and season with ½ tsp of salt. I,recommend keeping the veggies off the meat, in the liquid, to help boil and cook them, faster.,Cover, and cook another 40 minutes.,Smells fantastic!,Now let’s add in the zucchini and another ½ tsp of salt.,Again, don’t do what I did, keep the veggies around the sides, in the liquid to cook.,After 20 minutes check on your veggies to make sure they’re cooked to your liking,,if not, cover it back up and keep simmering till you’re happy with them.,Since I added everything in earlier, my zucchini ended up mushier than I would’ve liked.,Once everything’s cooked to your liking, transfer the meat and veggies to your serving, dish.,Now pour the drippings into a bowl, and return 1 tbsp of drippings to the skillet or Dutch, oven, whatever you’re using.,Whisk in 1 tbsp of flour, and cook over low heat just a minute or two, to cook out the,raw flour.,Measure your leftover drippings, adding water, if necessary to reach 1 cup of liquid.,Let’s go ahead and pour this delicious meat water back into the pot, and whisk together, until it begins to thicken.,Now I’m adding in ¼ tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup of sour cream, and whisking, until smooth, warm, and uniform.,Using some winter gloves to keep from burning my phalanges, I’m gonna pick the pot up,and pour the gravy into a bowl, this makes about 2 cups, so make sure your vessel of,choice is large enough!,All that’s left now is to assemble your bowl!,Serve yourself some beef, veggies, and a little gravy, and enjoy!,As with most of the recipes I’ve covered here, this is a fairly simple recipe, using, hearty, healthy ingredients.,I have no doubt this pot roast’s going to be amazing, but let’s see if this gravy’s,a winner, or if Betty is off her CROCKER..,Do you get it?,Did you see what I did there?,Alright, ok.. let’s taste the food.,Well, Betty, you’re a little crazy, but it works!,As expected, the pot roast tastes great, there was never a doubt about that!,The beef is soft and moist and the carrots bring a little sweetness to the dish.,And the gravy? The gravy’s amazing! It’s supe

Ranking the First Fifty! | Betty Crocker Vintage Recipe Cards

Ranking the First Fifty! | Betty Crocker Vintage Recipe Cards

hello Homemakers today is a very special, episode because we have hit 50 cards, from the recipe card Library so I,thought it would be fun to kind of take,a walk down memory lane and review all,50 cards that we've done so far and, maybe Lena rank them in somewhere like,or the top hits what were the biggest, misses who's the biggest flop originally,I thought I would literally pull all the, cards out and like put them on the table, and we like shuffle them around and then,I thought this is a modern show and I,have technology and the kids these days,on the internet are doing these things, called tier lists so I'm gonna do a tier, list of all 50 recipes we've cooked so,far on the channel so let's get started, all right so on my tier list I have five, different tiers the bottom one is the, worst here and it's called trash and, those are things that,um I put in the trash after I was done, cooking them they were so gross above, trash we have blah blah just means it,was like it was an okay recipe didn't,really taste that great kind of blah, then in the middle tier we have fine, these are recipes that I thought were, decent okay I was willing to eat them, but really nothing to write home about, above fine we have tasty these are ones, that I liked I enjoyed maybe I'd make, them again and then finally the top tier,we have iconic and these are just the, most incredible recipes top classic,Betty Crocker couldn't get any better, really show stopping pieces that's,that's what we're gonna put in the, iconic ring today and we're gonna go in,the order that I made them so starting, off with my first episode which was,Tangy Tomato aspic I was really nervous, that it was gonna take taste bad but I,actually didn't hate it like I kind of,like the shrimp salad that we put in the, middle I don't want to say it was tasty, though like I wouldn't eat it again so,I'm putting it under fine next up we did, orange baked Alaska's I feel like, because this was my second episode I,didn't really realize how incredible of,an idea this is like we literally carved, out hollowed out an orange put sherbet,in it and put it in the oven and the, sugar didn't melt and the meringue on,top got toasted and it was really cute, and incredible I was just like so,overwhelmed with the concept of like, filming myself that I didn't really take, the time I needed to enjoy the orange,Baked Alaska the way I should have and,so I definitely am going to put that, under tasty that was a really fun recipe, next up is fondue loha this was the, pineapple that you hollowed out and put, like a chicken salad in it but the, chicken salad had bananas in it and that, was really freaky to me and I didn't,like it and if I'm gonna be honest with,y'all I threw the rest in the trash so,sorry it's going in trash, presentation but just like very weird, flavor combination in my opinion I know,it's not that different from other types,of chicken salad like people put grapes, and apples and chicken salad I get that, the banana the banana okay and then next,up we did tuna ring with cheese sauce, this is kind of a sleigh I kind of want,to call it iconic yeah I'm gonna put on,I'm gonna put under iconic this is just,Berry Betty Crocker to like you take I,believe we use Bisquick you make a dough, with it you twist you put tuna in the, dough and you like twist it and you bake,it and then in the center you put a cup,of cheese and it becomes this thing that, you pull the chunk of bread and you dip,it in the cheese I mean the the,Innovation there is just so so beautiful, next up we did rainbow sherbet roll and, this was kind of blah it didn't really, work out that well it might have been, user air but I definitely had trouble, rolling it up the cake cracked I did, wasn't sure how to eat it the Sherbert, didn't spread well I just like a lot of,things went wrong with it and then at,the end of the day it just kind of,tasted like cake and ice cream,um the next one which is absolutely, iconic is the party sandwich loaf this,is my most viewed episode on my channel,so far and I can see why this is like a,show stopper um that concept of you, basically making a Savory cake where the, layers of cake are sandwich filling and, then you frost the cake and you decorate,it with Savory ingredients it's just so,it's inspired,um the next one is cranberry Puffs it's,kind of forgettable if we're being, honest it was okay I guess I'll just put,it under fine a fun concept to make kind,of like individual upside down cake, style treats the next one an absolute, sleigh Giant Burger going to the top, going to the top of iconic because, you're making a giant burger, sure that's already so cool and then, you're filling the Giant burger with I,believe it was like cream cheese and, mustard and horseradish so it's like the, toppings of the burger inside the burger, just start it was just incredible the,way you put ketchup on top it's,Innovation it's Innovation next up,grasshopper pie uh this is fine you know,it was a good pie someone told me in the, comments that I shouldn't have I put it,in the

One year ago, we all came  together for the first time,to cook a recipe from the 1971  Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library.,Today we celebrate our Bettyversary by exploring  more exciting recipes from this library,,I’m making Oven Porcupines…,without the oven!,These porcupines are very similar to the filling  used for cabbage rolls or stuffed peppers,,so I just know these will be very good!,You can turn on subtitles  by pressing the ‘cc’ button,,and if you’d like to try this at home,,I’ll be listing all of the ingredients and their  measurements in the description under the video!,We’re going to start out with our  beef and add in all of our flavorings.,Begin with some celery salt,,regular salt,,black pepper,,garlic powder,,then move on to the larger ingredients,,uncooked regular rice,,water,,and chopped onion!,With impeccably clean hands or food-safe gloves,,begin mixing, until everything  has been well combined.,Now, this may look like quite a bit of  liquid for such a small amount of meat,,but not to worry, it will all work out!,Continue mixing until the ingredients  are combined and the water has soaked in,,this’ll give you a very mushy mixture,,but we want all that moisture to  properly cook the rice through!,And then we want to begin shaping  the mixture into rounded balls.,I’ve just decided to make them about,,this big,,and try to get them all about the same size.,And now the shortening goes into a large skillet.,Melt that down and brown the  meatballs, a few at a time.,Now make sure to turn them to brown the  meatballs all over so you get a very nice sear.,And we don’t want all that fat in our final dish,,so we’re going to drain it  off into a separate bowl,,to be discarded of properly.,Now we’re going to mix together our sauce!,Add tomato sauce into a bowl,,along with water,,and Worcestershire sauce.,This will give the meatballs a  really lovely extra layer of flavor!,Mix it well,,and pour it all over the meatballs.,We just want this to simmer,,so we’re going to reduce the heat,,cover,,and simmer 45 minutes.,Melinda from Unboxing Betty  tried this recipe before, but struggled with undercooked rice.,So, I’m going to let mine  cook for a little longer,,just to be safe.,Let’s turn our meatballs, to  ensure the rice on top stays moist,,cover again,,and cook another 15 minutes.,And you’ll find that this is  a very nice meatball recipe,,full of flavor and very hearty,,very good!,And then you have this beautiful  tomato sauce to serve with them!,Delicious and filling!,The tomato sauce adds a very nice flavor and tang,,and the chopped onion and rice,,bring great texture and flavor to the meatballs!,A basic dish you can’t go wrong with!,Try these porcupines out and  let me know what you think!,Share your results with me on Instagram!,Tag me @Maikohhhh with four h’s!,If you enjoyed this video or  interesting vintage recipes,,don’t forget to give it a thumbs up and  check out my Vintage Recipes playlist!,I upload a vintage recipe every month!,Be sure to go check out  Stephanie at Ginger Snap Kitchen,,We're making oatmeal squares!,Jim at Jim’s Kitsch Kitchen,,I'm making pizza with a hamburger crust!,Anna at Cooking the Books,,I'm making coconut shoes!,and Melinda at Unboxing Betty,,I'm making raspberry ring with creamy fruit!,you can click that card over on  the right to see all their videos!,I hope you enjoyed the video,,if you did, please consider subscribing,,I would love to have you around!,Thank you so much for watching,,and I hope to see you all next time!

Retro-Cooking Wednesday * Green Bean Bunwiches!

Retro-Cooking Wednesday * Green Bean Bunwiches!

hi everyone it's lynn from halen vintage, and welcome back to retro cooking, wednesday glad you could join me so,today we're going to go over these green, bean bun which is these looked really, interesting look at those green beans on,there, kind of um happening there with some, onion rings and,all that goodness so,to make these though we have to do this, make a head,um hamburger mix so we're going to talk, about this make ahead hamburger mix, first so let's go over those ingredients,so the ingredients that we need for our, make ahead hamburger mix,i'm only doing a half a recipe, because there just wasn't a lot of,recipes to do with the make ahead, hamburger mix to show you guys while it,would be really good to maybe have it in,your freezer, for like tacos or chili or to make a,soup with but for us to actually do,recipes there really wasn't that much, but we're gonna go through it anyways, because it is kind of a good idea,so i just did a half a recipe so this is,the ingredients for a half a recipe i,have two pounds of ground beef,i have a half a cup of chopped onion,i have seven ounces of ketchup,a half a cup of water,i have an eighth of a cup of lemon juice, one tablespoon of brown sugar, one and a half teaspoons of,worcestershire sauce,i have a,quarter teaspoon of,dried mustard and,one and a half teaspoons of salt, and one teaspoon of vinegar, and then a quarter cup of chopped celery,so really all of these ingredients go,together we're going to saute the, hamburger, and the onion, and then we're going to put all of the, rest of the ingredients, together, and then this would be something that, you would put into the freezer so let's,go over the stove top and get this, hamburger mix done,my heat on like about a medium high i,want my pan to warm and i'm just gonna, put i have the two pounds of hamburger,in here, and we're going to just get this all, nice and cooked up and browned,so we're just going to brown up this, hamburger, with our half a cup of onion,so then once this is brown we want to,add the rest of our ingredients, okay so our hamburger is brown i did, drain it,so,the instructions are to add the, remaining ingredients, and then we'll let it simmer for a half, hour so,i'm going to put in the seven ounces of,ketchup, get it all out of there,we're going to put in our half a cup of,water,i'm going to pull all this off because i,have it all on my cutting board and i,want to put the celery in,all right,i want to get this celery in here so it,can saute and get soft a little bit so,our quarter cup of celery is going to go,in,got that in,all right give this a little bit of a,stir so right now we got ketchup water, and celery in here, okay,so we're going to add our lemon juice, that was an eighth of a cup,we have a tablespoon of brown sugar, and it looks like sloppy joes,so i have one and a half teaspoons of,worcestershire, one and a half teaspoons of salt and a,quarter teaspoon of,um dry mustard, and then we have don't want to forget, our little teaspoon of vinegar,so those are all the ingredients,so if i were to have done a full recipe, with like the four pounds of hamburger, then this was going to make five pints, which then would have been like for five, dinners,so this is only half so i only have like, two and a half pints,so we're just gonna split that into two, meals so i'll use half of this, for, today's,um recipe and then you know maybe,we'll come back and look at it because, you just put this once it's cooked in,your freezer all right,so we are going to,well we're going to bring it to a boil,so we want to make sure that as with any, soups or anything that we're doing we're,going to bring it to a boil cut it to a,simmer and then they want you to put a,lid on this and let it simmer for a half, hour,so,that is what we're gonna do,we're gonna put, this cut this to a simmer we're gonna, put a lid on it and then we'll come back, for an and a half hour, all right so this is simmered for a half, hour,i'm going to take half of this out and,put it in a freezer for another day's,use, and then we're going to assemble our um,green bean bun which is,with half of this meat mixture so let's,go over those ingredients,so the ingredients for our green bean, bun which is is two-thirds cup of tomato, juice they wanted nine ounces of frozen, green beans this is 12. i mean we've,discussed size before 1971 we know that, they're not the same, some frozen onion rings, and then it was american cheese or you, could use mozzarella cheese they wanted, nice sliced tomatoes,um we live in the world real world and, lynn forgot to pick up tomatoes and she, had, cherry tomatoes so she's gonna use, cherry tomatoes and in the real life if,that's what you had at home that is what, you would use so that's what we're using,i got some sliced pickle, and of course our buns so let's get, these babies put together,so this is our hamburger meat but keep,in mind like this should be frozen and, you're just supposed to add the tomato, juice to this, and i really think that that's to help,it when it's,frozen to help it defr
