hello and welcome to in the kitchen with,matt i am your host,matt taylor today i have an exciting,recipe for you i'm going to show you how,to make the dalgona or popchi,candy from squid game and this is the,little honeycomb candy that they use in,i think it's episode three and squid,game is a wildly popular show on netflix,and here is what it looks like,pretty cool and i want to point out even,though there's only two ingredients here,it is a little tricky to make here's a,couple other ones that i tried this was,my third try was almost successful,didn't quite turn out how i wanted it,but it's pretty good,and this was my my second attempt,doesn't look that great,and like my first attempt is just kind,of bad so it don't be alarmed if it,takes you a little time a few,practices before you get it to look like,this one which is really cool,and so what do we need we need just two,ingredients we need sugar and baking,soda two tablespoons of sugar and about,a sixteenth of a teaspoon of baking soda,okay and then you need a couple of,different cookie cutters i have the star,which is classic from squid game and the,circle which is also classic now you can,get a delgona kit which comes with a lot,of little things to where you can make,it yourself but i didn't want to buy the,kit i just wanted to make it with things,that you might have in your house and,then i have a little,spatula this is a silicone spatula and i,have a,cake pan here it's a non-stick pan,and first thing i want to do is i'm,going to just spray the bottom of this,and then just take a paper towel and,just wipe it down so it's just nice not,completely like,super liquidy on there but just nice and,greased up and that's ready to go i'm,going to use this to press down the,candy,and now let's go over to the stove top,now traditionally what you do is you,take like a metal ladle and you would,hold it over like a flame or the burner,and then you put your sugar in there and,stir it i'm going to use a skillet and i,have the the heat set to medium,low and then i'll take my two,tablespoons of sugar,and put it right there in the middle,okay and you don't have to stir it right,away but right when the sugar starts to,melt,is when you'll want to start stirring,and we're going to constantly stir,it's already starting to melt a little,bit,and we want to work you know just just,like what i'm doing you're going to just,kind of push it around and we're going,to just try to keep everything right,here in the center,and once the,skillet is warm or hot,this process does not take,a whole lot of time probably under five,minutes,that you can make this little candy,so just keep stirring and eventually,it's going to start to melt and if you,don't stir then the candy is going to,burn the sugar will burn it's going to,turn a nice amber color,okay and once the sugar is completely,melted,we can,remove it from the heat and then,immediately add the baking soda,and we'll just give it a good stir,and it's going to start to puff up,just keep stirring like that for about,10 seconds or so,and then i'm gonna i'm gonna just take,it,and just pour it,onto this,silicone mat,or you can do pour it on like parchment,paper,silicone mat works the best i've found,i've tried it with both,and now,i'm going to let this sit for about 10,seconds,all right and i'm going to push this,down,and then immediately put your,whatever you want to use right in there,boom,just like that,and i'm going to let this just sit and,cool for a few minutes and it's ready to,go,and then to clean up your pan,just run it underneath really really hot,water and that'll melt it and you can,scrape it out and it'll be cleaned up,really nice,all right we'll do this again,again two tablespoons of sugar,right there in the middle of the pan,the heat is set to about medium low,and then just stir and keep everything,kind of in the middle here,and once the sugar has completely melted,and it's nice amber color then what you,can do is take it off the heat,add in that baking soda,stir that baking soda around,it's going to get nice and puffy,stir it for about 10 seconds,okay,and we're going to take it and just pour,it,right down here,kind of in a circle here,and let it sit for 10 about 10-12,seconds,okay i'm gonna push it down,great,and then come in here and go down a,little bit,boom,and there it is there is another one and,then just let it cool completely and,just be careful when you're lifting it,all right the delgonia squid game,candies are done and some of them turned,out great some of them not as good some,of them broke on me but that gives you,an idea of what they could wind up,looking like,especially when you try them out it,doesn't work all the time but it's,really fun once you get it working like,these ones turned out really well,and now the game is to try to scrape,away the outside and just leave the,inside piece so like you just want the,star just want the circle,and without it breaking at all and the,kids the kids when they would play this,

hey i'm john cannell and today on preppy,kitchen we're making that dal gonna,candy from squid game let's get started,if you watch squid game like i have you,know this candy is not easy to release,so i'll be trying that at the end of the,video we'll see how i do,but it's also a little tricky to make,it's deceptively simple you just need,two ingredients and you're using a ladle,and like a little chopstick to stir it,together,but if you don't do every step right it,turns out,it turns out very wrong,no one saw that didn't happen oh it,broke anyways,so you can make this at home with things,you have parchment paper i have a,measuring cup that has a flat bottom,it's nice because it's metal so it'll,cool down really quick,a little baking spray or you can use oil,too we just want to lightly,lubricate it so it doesn't stick,and now we're going to get started,be calm don't panic and have everything,just ready,uh i want less,than,half of a quarter of a teaspoon of,baking soda it's a pinch so think of it,like a t a sixteenth of a teaspoon very,little is all you need i'm adding two,generous tablespoons they're a little,bit mounded,of,sugar,right into my ladle,my chopstick ready,and i also,let me tell you cleanup is not fun on,this so you want to have like some hot,hot water ready because you want to,plunge your ladle in as soon as you're,done so the sugar doesn't stick,otherwise you're going to be at the sink,crying crying tears,set it to like medium low medium,stir stir stir,just be careful not to burn your fingers,because it's like right over a flame,the sugar is gonna melt really quickly,it only takes about one to two minutes,and you're making a caramel it's a very,simple easy caramel when you add the,baking soda in it'll have a chemical,reaction and,create millions of little air bubbles,that make it nice to crunch into,you're going to see your sugar start,clumping up because it'll melt on the,bottom and you're mixing in those,granules so just keep stirring so it,gets like evenly melted and not burnt,you don't want it to be burnt burnt,i normally don't watch shows like squid,game is very it's like a lot,but we binged it in like two or three,days because it was so,good you can let me know in the comments,if you totally got addicted to it too,and i cannot believe the ending i'm not,gonna give it away as a spoiler but we,can talk about it in the comments so i,was like i didn't see it coming all,right this is getting a little crunchy,you can see there's granules in here,i'll be making these cookies more than,once because these candies they're,candies they look like cookies though,it's coming together it's looking like a,lot of little rocks but it'll just melt,into one thing,and if a little gets flicked away it's,okay,it's just more to clean up later,these are usually sold by street vendors,and um they have like a little crucible,just like you see in the,in the series,when they do a flashback this is our,version of a little crucible and the,nice thing is a ladle is just the right,size to make two cookies,and the other thing is that,you have to be so quick and ready once,the sugar is done because,it can get too hot it can get too cold,and it has to be just right to make them,properly,okay this is just about there,you can see i've been removing the ladle,away from the heat to stir and then,bringing it back in,it's like making scrambled eggs you can,like take it off heat sometimes if you,need to,right now i have my little pinch of,baking soda add that right in,and stir stir stir stir you really need,to stir the baking soda in because,it has to be uniform it's just like um,scraping the bowl down on your stand,mixer,so stir stir it's a beautiful color nice,and aerated,turn your burner off now you're going to,ladle this out,half for each of them,try and get it to be kind of round,oh boy,yeah all right putting it in the water,now press down gently and here's the,deal you have to really press evenly,if you press too hard on one side,the sugar will cool and you won't be,able to press your shape into it,the shape is optional but you're making,this because of squid game probably so,let's,let's get it as close as possible,let it sit there for just a second to,cool down the sugar is setting up then,you slide it right off,and you press the shape in,we did it although that got a little too,cold don't tell anybody,press down,let it cool for just a second,i'm moving it and it's jiggling but,moving a little a little bit too much so,just give it a sec here,and press our triangle in i made this,triangle myself,it looks a little wonky but it works,we're going to do one more set because,this got a little jagged,when you're working on a nice cold,countertop,you're going to be able to lift this up,almost right away,just like that so by the time you finish,your second cookie the first one,your first candy the second one is ready,to peel off,there we go,let's try this one more time i feel like,i have (tense music),(Gi-hun breathing heavily),(announcer speaking in Korean),(tense music),(Gi-hun speaking in Korean),- Hey, what's up guys?,Welcome back to "Binging with Babish,",where this week we're taking a look at the honeycomb candy,from "Squid Game," otherwise known as dalgona.,This is not dalgona, or rather it is.,This is a coffee drink that went viral on TikTok last year,,also called dalgona,,due to its very similar flavor of bitter and sweet.,More on that later,,because for now we're making actual dalgona,,for which we're gonna need some tools.,I bought a dalgona-making kit that includes what appears,to be a low quality cocaine mirror.,I'm gonna spray down both this,and the included stamping press with nonstick spray.,Then we're headed over to the stove top,,where we've got a little copper thingamajig,,into which we're gonna deposit two tablespoons,of granulated sugar,,stirring constantly while holding over medium heat,until it's completely melted.,Occasionally removing from the heat as necessary,to prevent from burning the sugar.,Once no visible chunks of sugar remain,and the caramel is a nice same exact color,as the thingamajig,,we're gonna add an extremely small amount of baking soda,,about an 1/8 of a teaspoon,,once again mixing constantly, mostly off the heat,,until it foams up and increases the volume of the caramel,by about 50%.,Then comes the easy part.,We just gotta turn it out onto our well greased coke mirror,,trying to pour it into as round a blob as possible.,Give our stamper another spritz.,We want everybody really well lubed up,,so nobody sticks.,And stamp it down until it's nice and thin,and the edges of the candy just peek outside the edges,of the stamper.,Ope, looks like we got ourselves a little stickage.,I don't know how that's possible,,but we can salvage this thing.,Once we get it reasonably flat,,we just gotta stamp a pattern into the center.,This playful little shape will determine later on,whether we live or die.,Go ahead and firmly press that into the candy.,And there you have it.,Once it's completely cooled with a little help,from our scooper slash fanner,,we can very, very gently remove the...,Ope, well, I broke it.,That's all right, first dalgona's always weird,,just like a first pancake.,Let's give it a taste.,And it's just a lovely, light, crispy, caramelized sugar.,All we gotta do now is try again.,This time, I'm gonna cook the sugar a little bit more gently,and add a little bit more baking soda.,This resulted in a lighter, fluffier candy,,which unfortunately, I stamped while it was too hot.,Let's try again, this time with a lighter caramel.,(beep) Damn it.,All right, this time,,let's try measuring the surface temperature.,All right, that didn't work.,So let's just keep trying until we get it.,(dramatic music),(scraper clatters),(hand slaps),(Andrew thuds),(beep) Damn it!,All right, turns out it takes some serious practice,to make these things.,That, or I'm just really, really bad at making them.,All told, it took me 16 tries,before I cranked out a single halfway decent dalgona,,which I'm realizing, I really hope I'm pronouncing correctly,because I'm saying it a lot.,But there it is, my fragile, sweet, golden medal.,Now all I have to do is extract the umbrella from within,so as to not get shot.,I'm employing the lick the back of the candy method,displayed in the show.,So far, so good.,I got the top of the umbrella,,but that's when things start to get tricky.,Just gotta very carefully...,Ope, okay.,I'm done.,Well, chances were, if I was this bad at making them,,I was gonna be this bad at staying alive.,I got one more decent umbrella here,,so I'm gonna see if I can't lick this thing. (laughs),Uh, sorry.,Shouldn't be so lighthearted when my life is on the...,Ope, I'm dead.,Guess I'll just resign myself to the fact,that I would never survive "Squid Game,",and make some dalgona coffee instead.,Into a metal bowl goes two tablespoons each instant coffee,,granulated sugar, and boiling water.,This gets beaten together on high speed,,and through a form of sorcery,,becomes a light, gooey, sticky,sort of no cream whipped cream that is spooned over milk,,served with ice.,From what I understand, this is called dalgona,because it tastes very similar,,sort of a marriage between bitter and sweet.,But I wanted to see,,can we make dalgona coffee with actual dalgona candy?,I certainly had enough screwups to play with,,so I threw a few into the bowl of a food processor,,and ground it up into a fine powder,,basically a dalgona sugar.,Make sure you keep this in the fridge,because it absorbs moisture like a sponge.,But I wanted to get even more dalgona flavor in there.,And I couldn't stop thinking about when I was making them.,To make the sugar easy to remove,,I would plunge the thingamajig into a pot of boiling water.,Wait a minute, wait a minute.,Rewind that.,There, there. today we're going to play the squid game,i'm making the cookie to see if i,survive you're only going to need a few,things to make this one is a nonstick,pan you're also going to need a star,cookie cutter preferably a metal one but,the plastic one will work about four,tablespoons of sugar,here's one,and you'll also need a pinch of baking,soda we're gonna take this over to stove,heat it up until it liquefies shouldn't,take too long,then we're gonna add a little bit of,baking soda just a pinch,mix it up bring it back to our non-stick,surface pour it on there and then we're,going to cut out our cookie cutter shape,turn the heat on medium-high heat,and now it's starting to liquefy let's,let it get all the way liquid,there we go now we can just turn off the,heat,take a pinch of baking,soda and mix it in,you'll see it turn different color,perfect,now let's bring this over to our baking,mat,now we just pour out our contents right,onto our baking mat try to keep it in a,circular pattern just like a cookie,put your pan in hot soapy water so it'll,clean up now take a flat bottom object,we want to flatten this out a little bit,it'll help it cool quicker,and keep it consistent,there we go we're going to take our,cookie cutter and cut out the shape but,not push all the way down so i'm going,to use a toothpick to check to make sure,it's ready it's not quite ready it's too,soft,wait about 20-30 seconds okay so i'm,just tapping the cookie with my,toothpick and nothing's pulling away,a little bit there but it should be good,now we're going to take our cookie,cutter and gently,put it in and push a little bit not too,hard,we just want to perforate the shape onto,the cookie,there we go,this side isn't perfect but i waited too,long for this side besides a little,thinner that's why,should be good now let it cool,completely once it's cooled down,completely we're gonna use our tiny,spoon and see if we can break away the,outside layer and win this game okay so,we're gonna use our tiny spoon and see,if we can break apart this cookie,without it cracking,if the design cracks that's it i'm done,for,carefully go around the perforated edges,okay,so far so good,oh no,thanks for watching i hope you enjoyed,watching make this cookie if you did hit,that like button also hit that big red,subscribe button and check out this,video right here and until then i'll see,you next time today we're going to play,the squid game,making,today we're going to,today we're going to play the squid game,by making the dogana cookies now,thanks for watching i hope you enjoyed,watching me make this

hi everyone in this video we're going to,make dagona candy or honeycomb toffee,it's very popular right now and if,you're not living under a rock i'm sure,you know why,and of course it's because of the,netflix series squid games making it is,really easy trust me you don't really,need any fancy equipment so now let's go,to the kitchen and we'll make some,gargano candy,we only need two ingredients we need,three tablespoons of sugar and 1 8,teaspoon of baking soda we also need a,cookie cutter you can use any shapes,that you have in your kitchen right now,i only have a circle one and because,we're currently in lockdown here in new,zealand,and only supermarkets are open and,unfortunately they're out of cookie,cutters i wasn't able to get any other,shapes,but don't worry if you don't have any as,well that's okay,you can make shapes using a clean,cardboard,or a paper plate and just stick them,together using a tape and you can make,something like like this,we also need a bowl or anything that has,a flat bottom,flat bottom to flatten the candy so here,i found the glass lunchbox,and i'm just going to use this so before,we make our doll gonna candy lightly,brush the things that we're going to use,with butter or oil,get a small cooking pan the smallest you,can probably find in your kitchen and,turn the heat on to low heat,now we're going to melt the sugar in the,small cooking pan so just leave it there,and you would notice after two to four,minutes it will start to melt,now we can see that the sugar is,starting to melt,you can stir the syrup with a stick i'm,just using a chopstick just to make sure,that all of the sugar melts,once it's melted like this take it off,the heat straight away,add a pinch of baking soda and keep,stirring until it turns into like a,caramel color,be careful don't stir too hard because,the sugar might splatter on your skin,and burn it,because that happened to me and i just,hope you guys don't experience that,quickly pour it over the parchment paper,then flatten it while it's still hot,because we greased it earlier we should,be able to lift the bowl easily,press the cookie with the cookie cutter,and remove it carefully,and because we greased this as well it,should come off really easily,important tip to remember while doing,this is to do everything very quickly,and don't leave the melted sugar on the,pan for too long otherwise it would,start to become real hard and you won't,be able to flatten and press the shape,it's pretty straightforward to make as i,promised now you can try and carve the,shape and good luck hopefully you end up,alive,and thank you guys for watching hope you,liked it don't forget to like and,subscribe and follow us on instagram at,preamc for more updates see you on the,next one bye,so,you
