reportedly designed to address many of the problems so often associated with,potato chips: Namely, they can be greasy.,They can get stale.,And they can break into pieces far too easily.,But no... not Pringles.,They really are the perfect snack when you just gotta have some crunch, right?,"It's more crunch, yeah!,This crunch is one you can't resist.,Our Pringles Ridges?,More crunch than thiiiiis...",Due to their innovative design and distinctive packaging, there's always been some confusion,as to whether Pringles can even be considered potato chips at all.,According to Taste of Home, "potato" isn't even listed as one of Pringles' ingredients,,only "dehydrated processed potato.",In 1975, the Food and Drug Administration ruled that the company would have to change,the packaging, unless they were willing to say that they used this dried potato ingredient,in lieu of real potatoes.,The brand decided to go with "potato crisps" instead of "potato chips" to get around the,FDA's pesky rules, a move that eventually caused a few issues across the pond.,After all, in Great Britain, all potato chips are called "crisps.",In 2009, Procter & Gamble, the company that makes Pringles, reportedly reasoned that they,weren't actually making "potato crisps," and their reasoning there is rather hard to believe.,According to How Stuff Works, they argued that," contain enough potato to have the quality of 'potatoness.'",The company reportedly did this in an attempt to avoid a Value Added Tax that's applied,to all potato chips and similar foods made from potato or potato flour.,Furthermore, the company argued that Pringles should actually be considered a "savory snack",and therefore be exempt from the tax.,The courts didn't agree, and Procter & Gamble eventually had to cough up $160 million in,taxes.,According to The Atlantic, Pringles consist of 42 percent potato, along with vegetable,oil, rice flour, wheat starch, maltodextrin, salt, and dextrose making up the process goes into creating Pringles' striking, stackable,shape.,Unlike other potato chip brands, Pringles are made with a mixture of potato flakes,,rice, wheat, and corn, which is rolled out into super-thin layers and then cut into an,oval shape.,The excess paste is then removed from the raw dough and subsequently placed on a conveyor,belt.,The chips are then shaped into the brand's signature arch with the help of a handy mold,,and then they quickly pass through boiling oil.,Once they're cooked, the chips are blown dry and sprayed with a powdered spice blend.,Finally, the chips are flipped into a stackable position and shuttled into their tall cans,before being sealed and shipped off.,"I don't believe it.","Let's see.","Pringles Newfangled Potato Chips.",As we mentioned, Pringles were invented to address the problem of potato chip's fragility,and propensity for getting all busted up at the bottom of the bag.,According to Snack History, the company first employed an organic chemist named Fred Baur,to solve this issue.,Baur spent two years using supercomputers to figure out the best possible size and shape,for this inventive new chip and its groundbreaking tube-shaped packaging.,The dimensions he settled on were aerodynamically designed to result in the least possible amount,of breakage.,Of course, nobody's perfect.,Baur reportedly got stumped on what particular flavor profile these chips should have, and,Procter & Gamble subsequently enlisted researcher Alexander Liepa to pick up where he left off.,According to Snack History,,"After over nearly a decade from the start of its development, Pringles potato chips,were released to the public in the year 1967.",For that reason alone, 1967 was a very good year.,"I've never seen so many perfect-looking hey everyone my name is kristen i am the,only fine vegan thank you so much for,coming back to my channel and for,watching another one of my videos in,this video i want to talk to you about,the outrage that has been caused this,week no,not the daily mail for a change this is,the makers of pringles who have decided,this week that they are going to start,adding milk into a load of their,products,so this story came about on plant-based,news this is where i first picked it up,so potato chip producer pringles as far,as outrage in the vegan community as,they are adding milk to some of the,products,it came after customers spotted several,flavors were no longer vegan one of,these is the texas barbecue sauce a,flavor that has long since been vegan,friendly and others that were once vegan,were original paprika smoky bacon and,sweet chili but now vegans won't be able,to enjoy the snacks due to added dairy,uh social media outlet vegan food uk,said it was a step backwards,the reason behind the change is to allow,pringles to ramp up capacity as well as,to save costs,it's also allowing the brand to reduce,the amount of food waste in line now to,reach sustainable commitments but the,brand hasn't yet publicly outlined,exactly how adding milk achieves this so,uh,for me right,it's a stupid move,on the part of the company that makes,pringles and the reason why i say this,is much like,it's much like when,vimto changed the recipe earlier this,year and they added in vitamin d3 i,think it was please correct me from,wrong but anyway they added in a non,vegan vitamin into the recipe for,um vimto cordial and quite a few other,bottles of it as well where basically,now you can no longer have it because,it's an animal based additive,and this this almost seems to follow a,very very similar sort of path and for,me,my take on it is this right so vip toe,kind of put this thing out saying right,well yeah we're doing this we're doing,that and we're going to change the,recipe we've got improved formula is how,they normally dress that up,but now i'm just like well then i'm just,not i'm not buying anything that you,make you know it's it's fine saying well,you know vegans can still enjoy,this than that that we saw make it's,almost like if you,if you,want to intentionally,sabotage and change your products that,were previously selling,just nicely without you needing to make,this change,that means i don't want to buy anything,that you make as a company so,you've lost my costume you've lost my,wife's custom so i wouldn't be buying,cans of fizzy vimto or vimto,if they're okay as a vegan i'm just like,well if that's the decision you make as,a company then i don't want to,support you as a consumer and i feel,very much the same,with pringles i don't know whether,there's going to still be some pringles,out there that will be,okay for me to have as a vegan or,whether you're just adding milk into it,but if there is,then i sure as hell would not be buying,them i i would just buy,a different brand you know there's,plenty of supermarkets that make their,own,tubes of stacked crisps yeah i'll do,them little do them and obviously you,know check your packaging and stuff but,i'm just not sure why we're getting in,such a fuss what,for me seems to,where i,smell a rat in that story,is the argument of to become more,sustainable we're adding dairy into,our products well,hold on a minute for you to,use dairy requires using,animals for you to use animals they,require,food and water,yeah so,in effect your argument around,sustainability is complete and utter,bollocks because,how how are you making a more,sustainable product a more sustainable,way of,manufacturing said product,when you are then using,animals that require a lot of,feed for not much return,and that's for me is what,that's what doesn't add up in all this,like i,i don't know whether,it's it's an intentional thing to put,dairy in more products i wonder whether,there's pressure from the dairy industry,to to,you know why don't you use why don't you,use dairy in your products again yeah,it's almost like,our our companies out there,wanting to put dairy in it in order to,try and,helps help to,support a dying industry almost and i,don't know whether,it sort of sits in that area but for me,my answer and my,suggestion,to to you as a viewer is just,stick two fingers up at pringles and go,well you know what yeah well next,year i'll just go and buy something else,yeah,and just let them suffer that decline in,sales okay that might be a few thousand,or tens of thousands of tubs of pringles,yeah but well in future i don't buy them,you don't buy them as a community we,don't buy them we boycott them as a,range of products maybe,who loses out they lose out we just go,and buy something else instead,let's not let's not lose any sleep over,it and let's not give a company that,makes,such a crap decision,any more airtime yeah let's just walk,away and go i'll tell you what if that's,what you want to do,you're the one that's losing sales

Harry: From calorie count to portion sizes,,we wanted to find out all the differences,between Lay's and Walkers in the US and the UK.,This is "Food Wars.",We'll start with a quick note,to explain their different names.,Walkers used to be its own company,and was the most popular crisp brand in the UK.,Frito-Lay actually acquired Walkers in 1989,,but they decided to still use the brand name in the UK,so all that brand loyalty didn't go to waste.,In the UK, Walkers crisps come in five portion sizes.,A multipack 25-gram bag,,a 32.5-gram bag,,a 45-gram bag,,a 65-gram bag,,and a 175-gram sharing bag.,The smallest that's in the multipack bag is 28 grams.,Then we move up to a 78-gram bag,,a 226-gram bag,,and then our party-size bag, 368 grams.,That means our biggest bag is 110% larger,than the biggest bag in the UK.,A few other things to note.,In the UK, if you get a flavored bag,,it's the same weight as the ready-salted version.,Whereas in the US, our flavored bags,weigh less than the original-flavored bags.,Take this bag of salt and vinegar chips.,It weighs 7.75 ounces,,compared to the classic regular-salted 8-ounce bag.,Back in 2014, PepsiCo claimed the reason,there is a slightly higher price per ounce,for flavored chips is the added seasoning.,OK, before we continue,,they're telling us, "Weighs less, costs more,because we're adding more seasoning." Right, guys?,Well, I got a question for you, PepsiCo.,What does that say there?,Says "Lightly Salted.",So I understand this has less salt than these guys?,Huh.,Closer inspection: right there, 7 3/4 ounces.,Not the full 8.,If there's less seasoning and salt in here,,why is it a smaller ounce and a higher price?,They're stealing my salt!,Salt, literally the cheapest thing on the planet.,We have a whole ocean full of it,,and yet they're still skimping on it!,Your move, PepsiCo.,This 28-gram bag of chips supposedly has 15 chips in it,,according to Lay's website.,Well, they lied about the salt,,what else are they lying about?,I'm going to count the crisps,in this 25-gram bag for comparison.,These chips are demolished.,I feel like it's more than 15.,This is what we call the,stoner-math section of "Food Wars.",We do the math so you stoners don't have to.,All right. So, one, two.,That's a whole one.,Little peephole.,Absolute Frankenstein of a crisp, this.,Arguably not one put-together chip in here.,OK, let's just ...,that's a chip, that's a chip, right?,So, the issue there is that the crisps,are all vastly different sizes.,Like, this one, just one crisp, but it's tiny,,whereas this one, also one crisp, but way bigger.,And we've ended up with 22.,Of all the arbitrary things we do on this show,,this has to be the most arbitrary.,Wow, look at that, everyone!,They gave me an extra chip.,16 instead of 15.,The last thing we wanted to check,was how much air you're getting in your bags.,Walkers in the UK are kind of notorious,for seemingly underfilling the bags.,We're going to find the volume of the bag,and then the volume of the crisps inside,to find out just how much wasted space there is.,What I need to do is carefully open the bag,just enough to let the air out,,and then I'm going to try and powder these,,like just crush them as far as I can,,and then measure the volume of the powder in this thing.,First I gotta crumble it up., Crushing bags with Harry.,Oh, this is like ... .,It's quite therapeutic.,It feels like I'm giving a massage.,Just, like, the world's worst massage.,I need something to kind of tamp it down,,'cause the air is stuck in there, so I'll just use,,oh, I don't know,,this pair of nunchucks!,Oh, yeah!,Now, step two is going to be,to find the volume of the bag itself.,So we're going to fill the bag with water,to try and find the volume.,Oh, God. Oh.,Tiny bit more.,Perfect.,Sarah: OK. We did it!,But now I have to get it in there,without spilling it everywhere.,Three, two, one, go.,Sarah: Oh, that is perfect!,Harry: Look at that!,That went pretty well.,We didn't spill water everywhere.,Oh, my God, it's, like, right to the top there.,That's crazy how that worked. OK.,Buchi and Wumi are making a triumphant return.,Go and watch the Oreos episode if you haven't already.,Some of that,,and then measure the rest.,Y'all brought number two!, Oh, God.,Can you see the bits of stuff floating around in there?,So, according to my trusted friend,PercentageCalculator.net,,around 90% of a 25-gram Walkers bag is wasted space.,I don't know what the math is,I'm supposed to be figuring out, I forgot,,but whoever's editing this, take all those numbers,,and this is the conclusion.,Now, that air is actually there for a reason.,It's nitrogen gas, which helps preserve the chips,and also acts as a cushion,to stop them getting smashed in transit.,I mean, imagine what it'd be like,if it didn't have all that air in there.,So, as much air as there is in there,,it's actually vitally important.,If anything, they should put more air in these things,,'cause these things, they turn into dust.,Into dust

Harry: From calorie count to portion sizes,,we wanted to find out all the differences,between Pringles in the UK and the US.,This is "Food Wars.",In the UK, our smallest Pringle size,is a 40-gram tube.,These come as a single tube,,as a box of 12,,or, around the holidays,,we can get a Pringles Christmas cracker,,which comes with four 40-gram tubes.,In the US, the smallest portion of Pringles you can get,is this, a snack stack.,This 19-gram snack stack comes in units of,12, 18,,this is super weird, 27,,and,48 snack stacks.,Our next size is a 70-gram tube.,We also have Pringles in this grab-and-go size,,which is 2.5 ounces, or 71 grams.,You can get them in single, obviously,,or in packs of 15.,This isn't even the biggest grab-and-go size, apparently.,They have a size that's even bigger,,that's 74 grams, or 2.5 ounces.,Uh, I ate that on the way here.,I'm sorry.,And then from there we go to a full-sized tube,,which is 200 grams.,All flavors weigh the same amount in the UK.,In the US, our regular tubes are actually small.,You get about 5.5 ounces per tube,,but the flavor actually adds to the weight.,Here's an original Pringles,,and this is only 5.2 ounces. can't,use the words fried or chicken at a,restaurant that's literally named,kentucky fried chicken it's kfc now okay,kfc,please stick to the approved acronym or,you'll upset them who's them,what the f is going on here you mean,fried,hello internet welcome to food theory,which we'll now be rebranding as ft,shoot that actually gets confusing with,film theory foot,foot foot tell you what we're gonna,spitball some shorter name options over,here on our end and uh get back to you,on that anyway today i want to talk,about a little something i ran across,earlier this year while doing research,for our three-way kfc crossover weekend,or should i say streamy nominated kfc,crossover weekend they all thought i was,insane but it worked what i had stumbled,across was a conspiracy the supposedly,real reason world famous restaurant,chain kentucky fried chicken officially,changed over to its acronym kfc in the,90s on the surface it might seem like,there's not much to theorize about here,i mean going by kfc is just a simple,slam dunk business decision it's short,it's catchy it couldn't possibly be,easier to spell plus it was already a,well-known nickname for the restaurant,at the time when the restaurant began,its rebranding circa 1991 the,international house of pancakes had,already successfully rebranded itself as,ihop howard johnson was embracing its,nickname hojo it seemed only natural for,kentucky fried chicken to hop on that,same trend at least until a chain letter,came along that sparked a full-blown,conspiracy theory that persists to this,very day that's right theorists there's,a pesky little rumor floating around,that kfc didn't actually change its name,willingly rather the company was forced,to change by the government because what,they serve doesn't qualify as chicken,what then are they supposedly serving,well as the theory goes mutants,featherless chicken-like creatures,raised in a lab and genetically,engineered to be meatier than actual,chicken honestly how could i not do a,food theory episode about this now as,you'd expect the restaurant flatly,denied all of this from the very start,in february of 1991 kyle craig president,of kfc us explained to bloomberg that,the name change was entirely their,decision and that it was simply a way to,minimize the effects of the word fried,not only because it carries unhealthy,connotations but also because it,undermined the company's efforts to,expand its menu beyond fried foods into,things like grilled chicken salads wraps,and so on and it makes sense at that,time the u.s was at the height of its,low-fat craze and fried foods were,public enemy number one by the way the,effectiveness of the quote unquote,low-fat trend or i guess i should say,the ineffectiveness is a food theory
