Atlanta dinner theatre serves up 30 seasons of mystery

welcome back 840 is your time it's the,biggest awards show around and no we're,not talking about the Oscars or the,emmys we're talking about the empties,but there's been a murder at this year's,show and it's up to you to help figure,out who done it so if you consider,yourself an amateur sleuth you can help,solve the mystery right now in Atlanta's,premier mystery dinner theater and good,day Atlanta's Paul Milliken is live at,Agatha's in Midtown this morning and,Paul you're on the trail of a killer,aren't you yeah and you've won a bunch,of empties right buck I think there's a,lotta gory so excited to finally be here,I've waited years to come to Agatha's,and we're finally here it's the 30th,anniversary season and when you come,right now you're gonna see and the,winner is murder that's the show and,this is the man well he's the killer,he's the man behind the murder who,plotted the whole thing Jon Babcock how,are you sir I'm doing well thank you for,coming it's so good to see you so first,of all how does it feel to be part of,the 30th anniversary season this is such,an institution here it is it's it's it's,great it's wonderful I've been writing,with the rim for five years and it's,been it's been wonderful a lot of great,people and really enjoyed it yeah so,explain how it works because you hear,dinner theater and I think people,immediately think so I sit there and eat,while I watch a show that is not the,case here no no they do the Acts in,between the courses so you're not you,know chewing and munching while trying,to pay attention to what's going on and,they you know make sure that that,happens so the Yalie all the acts are,about 10 15 minutes long and then,there's a break and then there's a meal,service so you know you get a break in,between and get to see the action,between those meals and this is a true,interactive show if you come and see the,show you will be part of the show that's,right yeah there are audience parts,there are songs you can be part of but,you know if you're very reserved and,don't feel like you want to talk that,night that's fine to just ya know let,him know but you know it's fun for,everybody I love that how fun is it to,write a show like this that is,interactive where you know men and women,off the street who have never acted,before are gonna be reading your lines,it's it's a lot of fun it's challenging,too because you want to make sure that,you know the people reading it who are,not professional actors they're gonna we,want to make sure that they look good,yeah and are getting some funny lines,and,not making things too difficult for them,so it's it's challenging but it's a lot,of fun and and people enjoy it,yeah well I know it's a tough job to,write for two of the stars of the show,because their big personalities let's go,see him I'm gonna put on my gossip,columnist hat right now ladies and,gentlemen it's Bob Flossie and diva,starlet how are you good the dining room,is empty right now I know well well,you're just warming up for the big show,coming up later now I've heard a rumor,that that you know as your name suggests,you're a bit of a diva what do you say,to that I say I think that people know,it love it want it Bob quite a suit,you've got on sir thank you I did a,muted color this more tv-friendly I love,it so during this night of theatre there,there will be some murders is that true,well unfortunately if the past couple of,shows multiple people have died but,that's your business okay how do you,feel being a professional actress and,star working with the general public I,have to say it's been a treasure to work,with the general public I have loved,every moment of it and I think that,we're all stars in our mind but only one,of us is diva starlet is it true that,she can be a little demanding of her,co-star no not a little go on I tell you,he takes more time in the dressing room,than I do well I think we'll wrap up the,interview for now guys but it's been,great we've got reminding me a lot of,some good day team members here big,personalities over in this corner of the,world continue and we'll go back to the,studio more coming up next hour though,and the emcee goes to the reporters Oh,Millie I'm the report notes we're good,mystery is located at 161 Peachtree,Center Avenue downtown so shows are,performed at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays,through Thursdays and eight o'clock on,Fridays and three o'clock in the,afternoon on Sunday so gotta head out,they're really good

good evening everybody and welcome to,tonight's event,i'm kate eason from the litton phil and,i'd like to thank you very much for,joining us tonight um i'd like to uh,welcome our speaker tonight ian mcardle,a very familiar face to us all i'm sure,um he's one of our most versatile,lecturers and he's and he's given,lectures on many subjects from aspects,of the first world war,to thomas the tank the creator of that,series of stories uh to the life of ls,lowry he is a long-standing member of,the littonfield and is a very active,volunteer so please join me to welcome,ian mcardle who tonight is going to be,talking about aguilty christie thank you,ian,thank you very much indeed,well agatha she wrote about mysteries,and she herself is something of a,mystery in at least it seems to me two,ways,she loved the good life,self-indulgent,comfort,but at the same time she showed enormous,creativity and energy,78 crime novels and about 150 short,stories,19 plays her sales to date or at least 2,billion in at least a hundred languages,including,chinese,russian,and arabic,and it's been said of christie christie,has probably given more pleasure in bed,than any other woman i hope you see what,i mean,so there is one contrast already the,symboretic life symbolic life she loved,but her talent her ability to work so so,hard and intensively,and the second contradiction in a,character which makes it very difficult,to throw up i think is that everybody,has heard of course of agatha christie,but at the same time she was a very shy,and private woman and the more famous,she became the more she retreated into,her own private world,intensely disliking public occasions,she says in her autobiography,inarticulate i shall always be,it's probably one of the causes that has,made me a writer,he was born into a secure loving family,her father frederick miller american by,birth,was a livable but rather indolent man,who preferred spending his time on the,golf course rather than looking after,business interests and he managed to,lose most of the inherited fortune that,he had received from his grandfather,and what a contrast he must have made,with agatha's mother clara,clara was the unwanted child the last of,four children she wasn't brought up,really by her mother but by her mother's,sister,who agather therefore called not granny,but auntie granny although she also got,on quite well with her real granny,but agatha's mother clara then was,brought up by her aunt and as a child,she had been quiet and restrained and as,she grew up she began to see the world,in terms of melodrama,thoughts darting through her brain like,swallows in flight,she had a powerful creative imagination,and intuition and agatha i hardly made,say would inherit those traits to the,full,probably only her mother really,understood her she had a very close,relationship with her mother but she,also allowed agatha great freedom for,example in 1911,she was allowed to take a first flight,in one of those so-called,aeroplanes,angatha was brought up really in a,matriarchy that was the women who were,the powerful decision makers her own,mother,auntie granny who i've mentioned sister,madge and the domestic servants most of,whom were women,so she had her sister and brother elder,sister marge,the,lively beautiful successful one who,would go on to marry very well,and a brother,i guess it was the youngest of the three,her brother monty the problematic,difficult one a bit of a waster who died,tragically young of an overdose,but in those years at the end of the,19th century life in devon in torquay,where she was born must have been very,pleasant growing up in an upper middle,class household security and comfort all,around him she grew up in ashfield as,you can see here a large italian style,stuck of stucco villa on the edge of,torquay it was a wonderfully peaceful,atmosphere i imagine in those years of,edwardian sit serenity,and there were many distinguished,visitors,at the time henry james,rudyard kipling and they indicate the,family's social standing at the time,now don't try to visit ashfield now,because this is all you will see,it was built originally on the outskirts,of torquay but was demolished in i think,it was in the 1960s when the house was,demolished,there were lavish meals no money was,spared here's his description of a,dinner party for ten people to which
