Why You Shouldn't Eat Clean: How To Lose Fat More Effectively
all right what's going on guys so in,this video i want to talk about clean,eating now let me start by saying that,if you follow clean eating yourself,and it's been working well for you and,it's something you feel like you can,happily stick to,that's totally fine i do think that,nutrition is very individual,so the problems i'm going to outline,here may or may not all apply to all of,you but i do think that there certainly,are better approaches to dieting that,many people would benefit from hearing,about,because despite its many drawbacks clean,eating is still extremely popular in the,fitness industry today,this was shown just last month in a new,survey covered in the latest issue of,the mass research review,of over a thousand young people aged 14,to 24.,now 88 of people viewed clean eating as,positive so only 12,saw it as negative in fact 71 of people,viewed clean eating as entirely healthy,with no unhealthy or harmful features so,clearly most people,probably including many of you still,think clean eating is a good idea,and i'll admit that on the surface it,really does seem like an obviously,reasonable approach,you just get rid of any dirty junk foods,and instead eat clean,nutritious whole foods what could be the,problem with that well,even though it seems to make sense on,the surface as we'll see i think the,devil is in the details,so the first issue is that no one seems,to agree on what clean eating actually,means and this has very practical,implications if you talk to your typical,bodybuilder they'll give you a short,list of six or seven foods,something like chicken egg whites brown,rice sweet potato oatmeal and protein,powder,and even with a list this short you,might already start to notice some,contradictions,people say a main criterion of counting,as clean as being unprocessed,whole or natural yet protein powder,almost always makes the list,despite being very highly processed,refined and synthetic,oatmeal undergoes extensive processing,as well now even though it's still,totally arbitrary i can see why brown,rice gets the clean label while white,rice doesn't because white rice goes,through some additional processing,to mill out the bran and the germ,stripping away some b vitamins and fiber,in the process,but then as pointed out in the mass,write-up it doesn't make sense why sweet,potatoes get the clean label while white,potatoes don't,because neither sweet potatoes nor white,potatoes are milled or processed,so it doesn't make sense for sweet,potatoes to be any cleaner than white,potatoes,other than the fact that the white color,reminds people of white rice or white,bread,which are more highly processed than,their browner counterparts in fact white,potatoes could be argued as being one of,the best,fat loss foods out there because of how,incredibly satiating they are per,calorie,one study found that when compared to,other common carbohydrate sources,potatoes are by far the most satiating,so what counts as clean,clearly depends on who you ask and what,diet they follow if you follow keto you,might say,all carbs are dirty if you follow paleo,you might say grains and dairy are bad,but meats and veggies are fine and this,is a problem because as dr holm said in,the latest mass review,if you tried to eat clean according to,every group's definition you'd have an,empty plate now this might seem like i'm,just nitpicking or playing semantics but,not being able to clearly define,what the approach actually entails makes,it hard to give dietary guidelines based,on sound nutritional principles,and can end up causing some pretty,serious issues as we'll see,so the second problem i notice with,clean eating especially when it comes to,fat loss is that even if it technically,works which it can it's still needlessly,inconvenient,for most people a true commitment to,clean eating means you're not able to,partake in special occasions or enjoy,dinners with friends or family,because what's on the menu is off limits,and that's kind of a shame because you,can miss out on a lot of life,for no reason since science tells us,that it's perfectly fine to be flexible,with your diet,and enjoy a variety of foods even some,processed junk foods,and you'll still lose fat just as well,as long as you're in the same,net caloric deficit over time and eating,enough protein,in fact it's actually better than that,being more flexible with your diet isn't,just,good enough for fat loss research tells,us that it's likely better than clean,eating,which leads me to problem number three,clean eating just isn't the most,effective strategy for long-term fat,loss,for most people one study from 2012 gave,two groups the same diet,except one group wasn't allowed to eat,bread and the other group was,clean eaters especially if they follow,paleo aquito might expect the group,without bread to do better,but in reality after 16 weeks both,groups lost the same amount of fat,but the group that was told to cut You're all ready to make the sandwich of your dreams.,Turkey, tomato, and Swiss on a bed of romaine lettuce,sandwiched between two slices of sourdough.,Classic, but oh no!,What's this? Mold? Ugh.,But look, good news, the mold's only on part of the bread,so I could just cut that away and be fine, right?,There's no such thing as a clean part of moldy bread.,That's because mold is a fungus like mushrooms.,The caps on the surface are easy enough to spot,,but there's a vast network of subterranean roots,called hyphae that you can't see.,So let's take another look at that bread of yours.,Ugh, disgusting.,Well, maybe you can just grab another piece,from the same loaf.,Well, that's not such a good idea, either.,because by the time the mold sprouts its fuzzy head,,what you're really seeing is the reproductive part,of the mold called sporangiums.,Each sporangium releases tens of thousands of spores,,so even though you can't see it, that entire loaf,could be teeming with fungus.,But it seems like such a waste to just throw it out.,After all, you eat mold on purpose all the time,like the mold that goes into making cheese, soy sauce,,and even life-saving antibiotics like penicillin.,Eating a little bit on your bread can't be that bad, right?,Well, ultimately, it's a gamble.,Just like eating a wild mushroom,many are fine, but some can be deadly.,Mold is the same way.,There are thousands of different species of mold,many of which are harmless to humans.,But since so many types can sprout up on food,,it's nearly impossible to know if what,you're eating is safe.,Cladosporium, for example, can sometimes trigger allergies,but is generally harmless,,whereas other molds like Penicillium crustosum,produce harmful poisons called Mycotoxins.,An elderly couple in 2005, for example, was admitted,to the hospital after eating a can of soup,contaminated with this kind of mold.,They had severe muscle tremors but eventually recovered.,But other molds, like Rhizopus stolonifer, can have,permanent effects, and you might recognize this mold,since it commonly grows on bread.,Blue green with black splotches and super fuzzy.,In rare cases, it can prompt a deadly infection,called Zygomycosis, which causes your blood to clot,and can ultimately starve your cells of oxygen,to the point that they die.,And it's not like bacteria, where a little heat,will eliminate the threat, because high temperatures won't,break down the Mycotoxins.,And since you have no clue which one you're about,to put in your mouth, ask yourself,is it really worth the risk?

a lot of people bread has gotten a bad,wrap yes becoming associated with empty,calories and little nutritional value,but not all bread is created equal that,is right so here to help us decode those,nutrition labels and to show us how to,choose the best bread for our needs is,consumer reports nutritionist amy,keating amy thanks for being with us,today we've already been talking all,about this this has gotten a lot of us,wondering but you take this down to like,the basics the three main things people,should look for when they go to buy,bread okay so the three basic things you,need to consider first and foremost,whole grains you want a whole grain 100,whole grain 100 percent whole wheat,bread you'll usually see that on the,label if it's not apparent right on the,front panel of the label you can look at,the ingredients and look for grains that,have the word whole before them,preferably at the top of the list the,second one is sodium,sodium is over consumed in this country,150 milligrams or less per slice would,be a guideline and added sugars another,issue real big issue right now with,people's waistlines less than two grams,of added sugars per slice is a guideline,when you're shopping all right and you,all went through 50 packaged popular,packaged breads now we're going to start,with the ones that got on the lower end,of the score and explain why okay,um yeah the ones over here really they,didn't make the cut and i'll explain why,at a first glance you'll think oh dave's,i'm just shocked that that's not you,know in the top of the list but the good,seed has a lot of good things going for,it it's usda organic it's primarily,whole grains it has a variety of grains,it has seeds which are healthy in terms,of omega-3 fatty acids but when you look,a little closer it has five grams of,added sugar per slice,okay and that's about the equivalent of,a teaspoon of sugar in every slice wow,so,that's not the greatest choice,the next one,nature zone perfect perfectly crafted,multigrain okay now what you need to,know about the bread terms unfortunately,they're not regulated so multi-grain,just means there's a number of grains in,there okay that bread has less than a,gram of fiber it has 200 a little over,200 milligrams of sodium per slice and,enriched wheat flour the refined flour,that i was just talking about is the,first ingredient so the consumer might,see that and think wow,sounds kind of healthy at multi-grain,but the term is not defined and consumer,reports is working to to help that and,make everything more transparent the,next one is seriously white made with,whole grain,that's to appeal to you know the white,bread and while made with whole grain,does indicate that there is whole grain,in there again there's no set amount,because these terms are not defined and,in fact you have the top rated brands,right there in front of you so why don't,you walk us through that yeah so,i've seen plenty plenty of people in the,grocery aisle,confused about buying bread and we've,done the homework for you so we have a,rating of over 50 breads,and these are among the top rated food,for life ezekiel,it it hits all the,all the guidelines no added sugar,minimal additives no preservatives dough,conditioners all the extra stuff you,know that can even that can add sodium,it's a variety of grains lots of fiber,low sodium how does it taste,tasting was not part of our test but i,do eat it and it's it's a great bread,now this is something to watch out for,because even within brands you can't,just across the board think a,brand is a good choice of bread because,we did say good seed had the five grams,of added sugar power seed is the one,that you want wow only one gram of added,sugar and then nature's own you know,this is really popular and it was it was,really encouraging to see this one up in,the excellence as well it wasn't as high,as ezekiel,but it did come in pretty high and it's,kind of your basic these have nuts and,seeds which are a great bonus but some,people are not really ready for that,transition so this is a good basic wheat,bread that was a hundred percent whole,wheat who knew,yeah there's a reason really interesting,confusing in the bread,it's so confusing oh well thank you so,much again amy keating did the work for,you we appreciate you being here and,taking the time to educate us all thank,you thank you for having me bread smells,it smells so good thank you amy,well hey there gma fans robin roberts,here thanks for checking out our youtube,channel lots of great stuff here so go,on click the subscribe button right over,right over here to get more of awesome,videos and content from gma every day,anytime we thank you for watching and,we'll see you in the morning on gma

no dairy no gluten no sugar for 60 days,you might be wondering why would you do,such a thing i've been struggling with,acne and skin problems for the last four,years i've cleared it before using,antibiotics but that was only the,band-aids of the problem i know that the,real cause of my skin problems is the,food that i eat i would notice after,eating too much sugar dairy or gluten,that my skin problems would flare up and,after researching further into it my,hypothesis seemed to be confirmed but,even though i knew the food i ate was,the cause the only issue is that's the,exact food that i love most and i have,never been able to cut it out for good,but now i'm a youtuber and my goal is to,help motivate all of you to become the,best possible versions of yourselves and,i can't be preaching that until i,conquer this challenge the first few,days were pretty tough i ate super clean,but was starting to feel one of the many,side effects of this new diet headaches,every time a strong craving hid i had to,fight it off mentally which would often,cause a headache that just wouldn't go,away it was especially tough to be only,drinking water as i normally would drink,a sweet beverage with every meal,considering my cooking skills aren't the,best getting creative and figuring out,what to eat every day was a struggle,all right i'm gonna go order some food a,lot of the food i ate was bland making,it very unenjoyable and that much harder,to stay away from the cravings this,meant that i often had to eat out and,every single time i had to be a pain and,ask the people to make everything i ate,gluten and dairy free could i have that,uh gluten free and dairy free as well,please but uh gluten-free please with no,gluten or dairy luckily there's a large,variety of dairy-free and gluten-free,options when eating out so it really,helps with my cravings when i wasn't,eating out though my new diet looks,something like this eggs with,gluten-free bread and avocado for,breakfast some kind of fruit is a snack,then chicken or steak with salad for,lunch and lastly for dinner a turkey,sandwich with gluten-free bread again,all of the gluten-free and dairy-free,options available in stores definitely,saved me during this challenge but this,right here this entire aisle i can do,all right it's uh not processed not,gluten not dairy,pretty much this entire area i i'm you,know i could live in this area right now,however they did end up costing more so,everything i'd save not buying the junk,food and sweet beverages would go into,buying the more expensive alternative,options around welcome back friends let me tell you,something about myself I do not diet,they're way too restrictive and way too,rigid to stick to for the long term I,need something that is flexible and that,is going to allow me to say I want a,cookie today I'm gonna have a cookie so,instead what works for me is I found,some healthy eating habits that I have,adopted that I can really just integrate,into my everyday life and its really,been the key to success for me it's what,allowed me to lose 30 pounds after,college and maintain a healthy weight,for years and years in a really easy,simple way so today I'm going to share,those healthy eating tips and hacks with,you let's jump right into this,all right tip number one is to look for,hidden fats and sugars in your everyday,diet some common culprits for this would,be things like cream and sugar and your,coffee at your afternoon coke or having,a soda with dinner and then things like,salad dressings and condiments it really,it's not about completely ridding,something from your die and saying I,can't have any coffee anymore or no more,sodas it's just about finding a,healthier alternative for me the first,thing I did was remove cream and sugar,for my coffee so I just drink it black,which I know it's too hard for some,people but maybe look at decreasing the,amount of cream or sugar or just having,cream or just having sugar,another thing is salad dressings and,condiments I like to make homemade salad,dressings which is like some olive oil,miss almac I also like to look for,healthier condiments things like mustard,and ketchup and relish have very few,calories and not a lot of fat so it's a,great substitute to use instead of,something like blue cheese or ranch,alright this next tip is one of my,favorites and that is to start eating,off of salad plates instead of dinner,plates in general we eat servings that,are way bigger than the actual servings,we need to eat and studies have shown,that if you take a bigger plate you're,more likely to give yourself a bigger,survey more than you actually need by,simply eating off the salad plates,instead of dinner plates I'm actually,able to eat a much more well portioned,meal as opposed to eating a meal that is,way too big for me alright my next tip,is to make healthy eating easier on you,by having some pre-made stuff I get it,healthy eating is more time consuming,takes a lot more out of you and when,you're on a rush you need something,that's just easy to sort of grab and go,my personal favorite right now is my,daily harvest smoothies this,movie company is really really smart,because you can choose all of your own,flavors from these late awesome groups,of super foods and they deliver the,smoothies directly to your house in,prepackaged cups and then you store them,in I know my friends thanks for stopping by,today I thought I would give you a,recipe for a clean eating chocolate chip,banana bread I make probably one loaf of,this a week Lu absolutely loves it if,you get 12 slices out of it it's about,190 calories per slice put a little bit,of peanut butter on it you got yourself,a beautiful little snack but anyway I,thought I would show you how I do it I,have a mixer set up here all the,ingredients we'll need all ready so,hopefully you can whiz through this very,quickly first of all you're going to,need three bananas and they must have,the spots on them they must must must,because this makes them sweeter and,takes the place of all the sugar you,would normally put in a banana bread,recipe so I'm just going to break it up,make sure these are pretty medium sized,bananas but I always use three no matter,what the banana size is I use three,bananas so I'm going to just turn the,mixer on a little bit to smash those up,you want to make them kind of like,they're baby food so um while this mixes,up and it won't take long because,they're very ripe so they they must shop,like baby food quickly and I will just,stop it and show you what you would look,for if I can work you see how that is on,there okay,just like baby food really you just,think when I feed that to my child that,has no teeth,all right to this we are going to add,our wet ingredients,I start with my two egg whites I just,took the egg yolks out two egg whites go,in and then we're going to put a quarter,cup of unsweetened apple sauce in here,just tap it in there from there we are,going to go on to a half cup of raw,honey I always use raw honey and I spray,the measuring cup with a little bit of,oil so they,if the honey all comes out easily if not,I just go ahead and scrape it all out,cuz you want to make sure you have all,the sweetness so that it tastes good,honey and the bananas honey's a little,healthier and the bananas and a lot of,sweetness to it so you don't have to add,all the sugars alright our next step is,going to be a quarter cup of coconut oil,now if you live in warm climates your,coconut oil will already be liquid for,you for me it's not so I set this big,bowl of coconut oil in hot water and,then I have a quarter cup and I will,just put it in there and get my quarter,cup of coconut oil I like coconut oil it,gives a rich creamy flavor almost like,you added buttered or something so,anytime I replace an oil in baking I use,coconut oil when I want to cut down on,butters and such you know all right so,we've got all of our liquids in the bowl,we are going to blend it up while that's,blending I have one and a half cups of,whole wheat flour I have also used,sprouted Holmes we trained for this,recipe and I have also used whole wheat,pastry flour for this recipe all three,work well but today I'm using 100% whole,wheat flour in the bowl to it I'm going,to add a one and a quarter teaspoon of,baking powder,make sure it's aluminum free baking soda,is 1/2 teaspoon recipe will be,underneath 1 tablespoon of cinnamon then,I'm going to put a pinch of salt I,already put in here I'm going to add one,tablespoon of ground-up i'm going to switch from my normal,healthy diet it's pretty healthy i eat,about 20 ultra processed food to an 80,ultra processed food diet and that is,the same diet sounds extreme but it's,the same diet that around one in five,people in the uk eat so i want to find,out if changing just doing nothing but,changing the proportion of ultra,processed food in my diet has any effect,on my health,my experiment will be run by one of,britain's top obesity experts to make,sure the results will be scientifically,valid,my first meal is a national favorite,fried chicken,it's the end of,the first day,i don't want any anyone to interrupt my,oh my god,it was really good,how about hot,it's crunchy on the outside,and salty quite peppery the chicken's,moist,what makes it ultra processed is the,chemicals that are added like monosodium,glutamate sodium phosphates and spice,extracts to name just a few is it good,it's like tickling some weird bit of my,brain,it's like crisps,this is my crisps oh,yeah exactly it would be impossible for,me to not eat i've eaten three of these,the reason,i ate these lasagnas the whole time,is because they're tasty,they are really quick,i've got to admire,the science that goes into this,sort of stringy,stringy cheesy bits,i know i'm going to finish this,and immediately want another one,this is,all in the name of science,my observation is simply this is,delicious and if i was served this in,some,amazing fancy restaurant as a dessert,that i'd never experienced before i,think it was a bit of sort of culinary,genius you get the bowl of dry cereal,you pour on the milk the milk goes brown,the texture changes it's all snapping,and crackling,you know an amazing bit of food,engineering,the rules of my experiment are that i,eat whenever i feel hungry which is what,i always do,but previously that meant eating three,meals a day with the occasional snack,now i find myself craving food much more,often,i'm entering week two of my changed diet,now what i'm having lyra is a stuffed,crust meat feast pizza,encourage her,sorry,i never would have thought of this but,when you read this very long list of,ingredients it just makes you think much,more deeply about like what am i tasting,and what are they trying to get me to,taste and how does this all feel in my,mouth,this is definitely,what the scientific paper is called,sorry,hyper-polishable,so it's just really really really,eatable delicious food,it's really hard to stop eating part of,that is because it's so soft it's like,it's got a crunchy bit,hmm what,you don't have to do hard i'm sugars so this has,all the appearances of a healthy meal,some foods that look pretty healthy can,still count as ultra processed foods,because they're industrially produced,and have multiple chemicals in the,ingredients list our fiber,source of protein,gluten free,i'm three weeks into my 80 ultra,processed food diet to measure how it,affects my body,and there's only seven days to go time,for some pudding flavored with delicious,potassium sorbate,you can really taste the potassium,sorbate,i'm not enjoying it but i can't stop,it's not like married,it's um,four a.m,i've had to come to the kitchen i can't,sleep,i've got a heartburn,i've got a headache,i feel like eating more food,it's nice having a cat when you're up at,night,well let's start with how you were when,we started so four weeks ago,magnificent what would you say a,standard man in early middle age yeah,that is you,after,i have the increasing man boob and also,your stomach is looks quite yeah,your weight went up by 6.5 kilograms in,four weeks that's quite a lot isn't it,and your body mass index went up by two,points which took you,into the overweight range and then the,body fat,went up by three kilos,if the weight gain continued at that,rate for six months i would gain six,stone,next are my hormone levels i'm,particularly interested in the ones that,tell my body if i'm hungry or full have,they changed and what we found is that,the hunger hormone in your blood went up,by 30 percent,once you've been on the diet so that's,why i felt hungrier yes and what about,the hormone that makes me feel full we,saw a decrease,in the fullness hormone so you've got a,double whamm
